- Train your employees. Teach employees to stay alert at all times. Also make sure each customer is greeted, and lingering customers are asked if they need assistance.
- Examine your store. Take a good look at the interior of your store, and identify areas where shoplifting might occur, such as a hidden aisle or a part of the store where the lighting is dim. Make efforts to improve these areas.
- Staff enough employees. Make sure you have plenty of employees in-store at any given time. An inadequate number of employees can make it easier for a shoplifter to steal items.
- Deal with shoplifters safely. Always give people the benefit of the doubt. If you suspect someone is trying to steal something, never accuse them. Give the person the chance to pay for the item by saying, “Can I ring you up?” Never try to physically stop a shoplifter – this is extremely dangerous. Call security instead.
Shoplifting is a threat to all retailers, but with the right precautions, it can be minimized or even eliminated. To further protect your company, invest in business insurance, Indiana!
