Did you know that a home inventory can be very beneficial when filing an Indiana home insurance claim? If your belongings were ever stolen or destroyed, would you be able to list all of the items to be replaced? That’s where an inventory comes in! Here are some tips:
- Create a list or spreadsheet with sections for a description of the item, the make and model, the date of purchase, and the purchase price.
- Go room by room and write down each item in the room. Include all furniture, appliances, electronics, artwork, DVDs, instruments, and other miscellaneous items. The point is to keep track of every item you own!
- Use a camera to take photos or video of bookcases, DVD collections, and inside closets and cabinets. This will help you know exactly where everything is located.
- Store the information in a safe place. Make multiple copies and store them all over the place! Put one in your safe deposit box, one at a friend’s house, and keep a digital copy saved in your email. Do not keep the only copy in your home. If it is lost in a fire or damaged in some other way, it’s useless!
A home inventory can make filing a claim for home insurance in Indiana much simpler and stress-free. But remember: get started as soon as possible so you’re always prepared!
